CASE STUDY: UW Creative / Illustration

BACKGROUND:
UW Creative is a self-sustaining unit at the University of Washington and as such runs much like a small business. Previous illustration was done by a part-time illustrator/graphic designer. When he left the position, as the manager I was left with a gap in capabilities to offer potential clients.

SOLUTION:

  • Hired a specialized medical and scientific illustrator to take advantage of gap in available resources on campus.

  • Leveraged partnerships with medical,
research and marketing departments within UW Medicine to increase illustration business, therefore creating a positive effect on the bottom line.

  • While watching a medical program on UWTV, observed the medical illustrations used were sub standard and not very dynamic.

PARTNERSHIPS:

UWTV
Successfully, leveraged contacts at UW Medicine Marketing to set up a presentation of our capabilities in medical and scientific illustration.

Negotiated one project contract consisting of a heart motion graphic for a UWTV program which then grew to UW Creative producing 75% of the motion graphics for all medical videos on UWTV.

NOAA
Cultivated a relationship with NOAA resulting in high level scientific illustrations explaining the Gulf oil spill for NOAA legal cases.

Capability Marketing
Developed a stock illustration library with customizable components available to the UW Community that was more cost effective and accessible than standard outside resources.
